SUGAR GROVE CHRISTIAN CHURCH
WHO ARE WE? WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?
I. Church means all those "called out" to assemble, worship and work in the name of Jesus Christ. The church is made up of Christians- baptized believers in Christ. Those who are saved by faith, enter into the church, the body of Christ.
II. This local congregation strives to pattern itself after the New Testament. The Bible is the only rule of faith and practice. We call ourselves Christians only, and have no creed but Christ. Our lives, as His disciples, are based on the principles of humility, love, and sacrifice.
III. There is no outside rule or authority over this Church. We have no denominational affiliation. Leadership is chosen by the local members in accordance with Scripture. Elders- spiritual overseers. Deacons- to serve the congregation in various capacities. These individuals should meet certain qualifications as outlined in Scripture.
IV. We are part of an historical movement that began nearly 200 hundred years ago in the U.S. to eliminate denominational barriers, in order to carry out Christ's prayer and desire for unity of all his followers.
V. We understand there is a priesthood of all believers, each with access to God, and each using their talents, gifts, money and influence to build up the body, and further the cause of Christ and the Church.
VI. Our mission is to take the message of salvation to a lost world. We strive to reach out and witness to our community and to fulfill the commission of Christ to preach to every creature by being active in world missions, committing our resources to share with other nations in evangelism, teaching, and benevolent work, in the name of Christ.
VII. We seek to aid, comfort, teach, and minister to the
needs of our members of every age. Our corporate worship together
consists, as the early church, in fellowship, the Lord's supper, teaching,
and prayer, every first day of the week.
===============================================================================
The Sugar Grove Christian congregation
was founded in 1916 with the construction of a building completed the following
year. The church building has undergone dramatic changes since 1968,
with four additions and major renovation. The building is located
at 3861 Stepstone Road, between Owingsville and Mt. Sterling, Ky.
A Christian Community Center is located nearby with fellowship hall, kitchen
and gym facilities. It is available for community use and for many activities
of the congregation.
Sugar Grove is a Christ-centered congregation,
independent of any denominational affiliation, wearing only the name Christian
and seeking to serve in love within the simplicity of the New Testament
example of discipleship. There is no creedal statement except Jesus
as Lord, no book but the Bible, no law but love. In essentials of
Bible doctrine and salvation, the members seek unity, while allowing for
liberty of opinion in other matters.
All those who have repented
of sins, accepted and confessed Christ as savior, and been baptized into
Him, are received as members of the church. The congregation is governed
after the Biblical pattern with elders as spiritual overseers, and deacons
serving in ministry capacities. These men are duly elected each year by
the congregation.
The church believes in the priesthood
and ministry of all believers. There is no full-time staff.
Francis Nash, of Grayson, Ky. is in his 40th year as minister for Sugar
Grove. He is a graduate of Ky. Christian Univ. and holds three post-graduate
Masters degrees from Morehead State University. He is general manager
of Grayson radio stations.
The congregation is currently
made up of approximately 175 members with an average Sunday morning attendance
of 135.
Sugar Grove seeks to have a global vision, taking seriously
the command to disciple all nations. Over 40% of all church funds
are used in worldwide evangelism and benevolence. Besides the monthly support
for over a dozen foreign and domestic missions, Sugar Grove assists in
administering the Workers for Mexico Mission, an extensive missionary
outreach (see website) workersformexico.org
The church raises funds yearly for construction
projects in that country--- 91 different members have made short-term
mission trips, many of them going every year. In addition over 85
other Christians from various churches have accompanied Sugar Grove on
trips.
Locally, Sugar Grove reaches out to
the community through the bi-monthly newsletter, The Greeter, as
well as radio mini-messages heard on WMST 1150. Members of Sugar
Grove help conduct services each Sunday at the regional jail. Members work
with and sponsor youth groups, trips and activities for all ages, along
with softball and basketball teams. The womens ministry (CIA) meets
monthly and works in areas of benevolence, prayer, meals and ministering
to the sick and shut-in, college students and several missions.
The men work with the Cave Run Mens Fellowship in cooperation with
other congregations. Over 40 different members, weekly, will be involved
in some teaching or administrative activity for the church. Small groups
for women and young adults are active.
Services are each Lord's Day with
Bible School for all ages at 10 a.m. Morning Worship at 11 a.m.,
with announcement videos beginning at 10:50. The service centers around
the Lord's Supper, with Scripture, prayer, contemporary and traditional
music, and the message. Wee worship and Junior church is held three weeks
each month, with Youth Sunday, each fifth Sunday as youth serve.
Each Sunday evening at 6 p.m. there
is Family Night featuring graded classes, adult session and periodically-
music programs, fellowship meals and special events. A church van is operated
