CANCELATION
The Workers for Mexico conference that had been scheduled
for Monterrey in August has been cancelled. The costs of food and
fuel
have grown tremendously in Mexico and it became apparent, we would be spending
far more than we budgeted. It reached the point where we had to make
a decision on how wise was it to spend that much money when our families
are hurting financially. Sugar Grove Church had always sponsored
the meeting and has decided to use the money set aside to give all our
families some extra summer cash to help cope.
Airline tickets have more than doubled or tripled
in some cases. This does not bode well for our Short-term mission
teams, and we can only hope that something on the economic
or political scene will pull all these costs---airfare and fuel--
back to within affordable levels.

MATAMOROS-
The
Prison Ministry continues with course work offered by Daniel de la Cruz
and Gerardo Dominquez, our two ministers in the city. Francis Nash
was guest speaker at recent graduation of nine of the men from the semester
courses.
Their churches continue to grow,
with building expansion underway at Gerardo's Villa colony congregation,
but construction has stalled with the cancellation of some work teams.
NUEVO LAREDO..
Recent
construction has expanded the building at Progresso colony and the congregation
of Angel Balderos. Also new additions have been added to the
large complex at Mision 20 with Rehu Menchaca, our dentist-evangelist.
We have five students now in the Student House with Jesus
and Socorro Menchaca. They are attending the university and helping
with the church, as we provide a place to stay for them. Recently,
one student graduated from the university and is now continuing one more
year to receive his masters in education.
VERA CRUZ.. Pedro Toga is working at four mission points. Work is complete on a building in the mission of Cuesta Amarillo.. The first services have been held in the new two-story camp building in the seaside village of Toro Prieto. Building work is underway also at Rodriquez and the congregation of Noe Toga.
SANDIA- Getting ready for the summer activity after a record camping season last year. Bro. Looney will be gurest evangelist for the July family camp.
SOMBRERETE. Several work teams have assisted in getting the girls dorm completed and made other improvements as they get ready for two weeks of camp in July this year.
MONCLOVA-a new work has been started by the Estancias congregation, in a nearby colony after land was donated by an elder. The building is up and services are being held under the direction of the minister, Ernesto Rico. Bro Elias Ruiz is working now at the Obrera congregation, which is growing. Bro Miquel Ayala is working at the 2nd de abril colonia and the Constanos congregations.
MEXICO VILLAGE EVANGELISM.. The feeding program continues to grow in Sandia Grande with help from the brethren in Monterrey. The building at Dr. Arroyo has been occupied. The ministers are at work establishing new missions including one in the area of Sabanilla. The church at La Trinidad is completing a new structure and we recently purchased new chairs for the La Soledad church. Recently the home of Filemon Castro was flooded and they lost most everything. Several U S churches and individuals have responded with assistance.
MONTERREY -Bro
Chano Medrano from the Mirasol congregation spoke at the regional church
rally recently.
Work continues on the building
at Guadelupe with Bro. Alfredo Valdez.
SALTILLO- Bro. Alfonso
Olivares reports several new families as the Colonia Salvador church continues
to grow with three baptisms last month and well over 100 in attendance.
The church has started a new work in the Paraiso colonia and it continues
to grow.
QUERETARO.. If you'd like to sponsor a student you can do so for just $500 per semester, which will cover their total expenses. The college is in financial need right now to do some plumbing and remodeling work and is enlisting Mexican church leaders to help with recruiting and promotion.
